Time resolving self-focusing effects in semiconductor QW optical amplifiers

Abstract

Mode changes occur in highly inverted QW laser amplifiers when a strong pump pulse removes carriers from the wells by stimulated emission, and carriers from the. reservoir (cladding layer) begin to replenish the wells.1 Due to the small confinement factor for the QW device, the mode profile is mostly sensitive to changes in the refractive index of the reservoir. As the density of carriers in the reservoir is reduced, the refractive index goes up, and the near-field mode profile narrow.
