Abstract

With the introduction of the technique of direct ultraviolet side writing1 the fabrication of permanent phase gratings in suitably photosensitive glass optical fibers has become practical. The technological importance of these all-fiber gratings as Bragg reflectors at communications wavelengths2 (e.g., 1.55 µm) is fueling the search for a more complete understanding of the process by which the gratings form.
