Abstract
In Nd:GdVO4 both broad homogeneous absorption lines and homogeneous emission lines have high peak cross sections. As we show in this paper the accidental degeneration of the 4F3/2-level in GdVO4 enhances the emission cross sections because the spectra condense into fewer emission lines. Nd:YVO4 which is a similar compound has a 4F3/2-splitting of 18 cm-1.1 To our knowledge this is the first report on the use of GdVO4 as a laser host. We also do not know other laser crystals with degeneracy of the upper -laser- level.
