Abstract

Fused quartz has a most desirable thermal property for an average power laser host material. The lower thermal expansion coefficient and higher glass transition temperature increase the thermal shock parameter. The absorption coefficient in visible and near infrared region is so small that it has the higher laser damage threshold. Its amorphous structure is suitable to scale the large optic used in a high power-laser system such as a fusion driver.
