Abstract
Recent materials research has led to new classes of materials with a large χ(3). An important application for such new χ(3) materials is optical limiting devices. Among the new materials, PbPc(CP)4, has both a large nonlinearity and the largest figure of merit, χ(3)/α, that we have observed. In this paper the effectiveness of PbPc(CP)4 as an optical limiter is studied. We identify experimentally some of the factors that determine the threshold and dynamic range of the limiting and compare PbPc(CP)4 with other available materials.
