Abstract
We have generated 1 ps pulses with pulse energy as high as 2.5 nJ from an erbium-doped fiber laser. To our knowledge these are the most intense pulses generated directly from an Er fiber laser. The mode-locking combines pulse shaping by a nonlinear-optical loop mirror (NOLM)1 and a nonlinear coupler. Previous figure-eight lasers with nonlinear amplifying loop mirrors (NALM)2 have failed to produce stable pulses. Also the pulse energies in these lasers typically have been less than 100 pJ. We use the NOLM to increase the switching threshold and force the laser to oscillate at a fundamental cavity round trip. Although theoretical calculation supports the possibility of mode-locking a laser with an NOLM3, no short pulses have been reported before this presentation.
