Self-Stabilizing Synchronously Mode locked Erbium-Ytterbium Fiber Laser Pumped with a Nd:YAG Laser

Abstract

Stable synchronously pumped mode locking operation of an erbium fiber laser is demonstrated for the first time. The technologically important Nd.YAG laser operating at 1.064 µm serves as the pump source. In contrast to conventional synchronously pumped laser systems we do not rely on gain saturation for pulse formation. Instead we use pump-induced phase modulation to periodically perturb the fiber laser cavity via cross-phase modulation, thus forcing short-pulse oscillation of the fiber laser.
