Abstract

In the field of parallel optical data and signal processing there is strong need for opto-optical devices working at low electrical and optical energy dissipation, in order to keep thermal effects on a tolerable level in 2-dim arrays with high pixel density. Moreover, the devices should have an opto-optical gain to guarantee the cascadability of the devices with a reasonable “fan out,” Some time ago we proposed a new concept for opto-optical devices1 which is very promising to fulfilling the requirements mentioned above. This concept is based on a hybrid combination of opto-electrical threshold switches with high opto-electrical gain2 and high contrast electro-optical n-i-p-i modulators.3
