Abstract

The generation of picosecond pulses from excimer lasers is of considerable interest for photochemistry, time-resolved spectroscopy, and for the production of intense electric fields. In Ref. 1 an effective method of generating 200-ps duration pulses directly from a XeC1 excimer laser was described The narrowband laser radiation was focused below the surface of n-hexane inducing stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) If the intensity was sufficiently high for optical breakdown at the air-liquid interface a short backscattered pulse was observed. The authors’ proposed that backward scattering was truncated because of laser spark appearance and termed this process "truncated Brillouin scattering" (TRUBS). Development of the TRUBS technique was reported2-6 for KrF4,5 and dye lasers6 pulse shortening. We present results obtained from a much simplified version of the experimental apparatus for which we have obtained 40-ps duration pulses at 248 and 193 nm using a single discharge module.
