Abstract

The enhanced electro-optic effect, based on the quantum confined Stark effect or the Franz-Keldysh electro refractive effect, has motivated interest in the photorefractive properties of multiple quantum well (MQW) structures.1-3 Recently, Wang et al.1 demonstrated an enhancement in the two-beam coupling gain (G = 200 cm-1) over the best bulk semiconductors by using a dc applied field EO ≃ 5 kV/cm, which is parallel to the MQW layers. Patrove et id.2 have additionally increased the gain (G = 500 cm-1) through the quantum confined Stark effect. This enhancement was achieved by applying the acelectric field perpendicular to the layers.
