Abstract

There has been a growing interest in investigating the realizability of an optical CT (computed tomography), which is expected to offer more specific diagnostic information concerning the physiological activities and defects than the morphologic information obtainable from tire x-ray CT. The biggest difficulty in realizing an optical CT is the highly-scattering property of the biological tissue. In order to get the useful projection data necessary for reconstructing a CT image, distinguishing the straightforward transmitted components from the total scattered transmitted light is a crucial requirement. Most trials previoulsy reported were based on the time-resolving technique using a streak-camera1 or a TAC system2 or a certain optical temporal gating phenomenon,3 whereas the space-resolving procedure was applied using a rather complex heterodyne technique.11
