Abstract
In this paper, we demonstrate a new type of output coupling scheme for semiconductor ring lasers. This scheme is based on a 45 total internal reflection (TIR) mirror that penetrates part way into the ring waveguide to reflect a portion of the circulating optical power to an output waveguide normal to the ring cavity. By varying the degree of lateral penetration of the TIR mirror into the ring waveguide, the fraction of outcoupled power can be controlled. These new outcouplers result in a reduced lasing threshold and increased output power and slope efficiency as compared to devices with Λ-junction output couplers.
