Abstract

For a soliton communication system with lumped amplifiers, Gordon and Mollenauer have calculated the bit error rate (BER) caused by timing jitter and by energy fluctuation which all result from the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, respectively.1 They have pointed out that there is an optimal value for the fiber dispersion to make the BER minimum. In this paper, we present a simple approximate analytical formula for the optimal fiber dispersion by using the Gaussian approximation for both the timing bit error and the energy bit error.
