Abstract
It is essential to be able to determine the mode spectra, polarization, and the beam radiation pattern characteristics of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) for a number of practical applications. For example, broadband optical-fiber interconnections and two- dimensional-array optical processors require lasers with good higher-order mode suppression and narrow-line widths. Also, for efficient optical coupling into a fiber, a well-defined, sharp beam is crucial.
