Abstract

A nonlinear optical resonator with delayed feedback can exhibit a large variety of multistable oscillation modes and chaos.1"3 It has been proposed4 and experimentally confirmed5 that by introducing simple adaptive feedback control to the input optical power chaotic mod e transition can be used to search among multistable modes. This shows the usefulness of chaotic dynamics for control and processing in an optical system. In this paper we report the results of an experiment in an electro-optic (E-O) ring resonator, which demonstrates how the value of control parameters for adaptive mode selection can be tuned by referring to quantitative characteristics of chaotic mode transitions.
