Abstract

As new digital, video, and distributed computing applications are developed, the aggregate data rates on optical networks can quickly saturate the capacity of a single-carrier channel (around 10 gigabits). Other technologies, such as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), are needed to utilize the ultimate bandwidth of an optical fiber. In recognizing this potential and needs, there lias beer a growing interest in opto-electronic
