Abstract
Upconversion energy transfer processes affect the operation of several laser systems. They have been used to make efficient short wavelength lasers while optically pumping laser materials at longer wavelengths1; and they have been identified as a loss mechanism in certain infrared lasers.2 A thorough understanding of these processes is required to properly design laser systems when upconversion is active.
