Abstract

Rare-earth-doped fiber lasers and amplifiers have important applications in optical communication and for fiber sensors. The basic parameters determining the performances of the active devices are the stimulated emission cross-section and lifetime. For the Pr3+-doped silica fiber, the emission cross-section and lasing characteristics have been investigated based on cw and Q-switched lasing operation.1 In this paper, we investigate the fluorescence spectrum, lifetime and transition branching ratio of the metastable level 1D2. The peak emission cross-section ofthe1D23F3,4 transition is derived.
