Dependence of optical quality on growth conditions of large, rapidly grown crystals of KH2PO4 and KD2PO4

Abstract

We require very large, high quality crystals of KH2O4 (KDP) and its deuterated analogue DKDP for advanced, high-power, fusion lasers. In order to reduce the cost of these crystals we are developing a rapid growth method for their production. Using this method, we have grown both KDP and DKDP crystals up to 15 × 15 cm2 in cross section at rates of 5 to 40 mm/day which is five to forty times the rates achieved with conventional methods.
