Hypersonic wave absorption effect on the quality of phase conjugation by SBS

Abstract

Factors degrading the quality of phase conjugation (PC) by SBS of a repetitive-pulse radiation in a medium with no optical absorption are studied. They are related to heating of medium due to absorption of a hypersonic wave excited by SBS. The number of absorbed acoustic phonons is approximately the same as the number of Stokes phonons. The maximum energy density of the focussed laser radiation above the SBS threshold is concentrated in the area between the focal waist and the nonlinear medium input. In result the laser beam and its focal waist are distorted.
