Abstract

Brillouin loss in optical fibres offers greatly enhanced performance for distributed sensors when compared with Raman scattering as sensing lengths >50 km combined with spatial and temperature resolutions of 3–5 m and 1°C with significant reduction in data acquisition time can be achieved.
