Abstract
Just a couple of years ago, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) were considered little more than laboratory curiosities offering only limited potential for real applications. Today, they appear destined to revolutionize the optoelectronics industry by providing a much more manufacturable laser source than previously available. Such a source is necessary to reduce the cost of simple optical links and enable the widespread introduction optical interconnects both between and within information processing nodes.
