Polarization decorrelation in optical fibers with randomly varying birefringence

Abstract

Even the best communication fibers are bi- refringent. The orientation and the strength of the birefringence shifts randomly, scattering light from one state of polarization to another in the process. The polarization dispersion which results will limit the transmission rate in both linear and soliton systems.
