Abstract
Passively mode-locked fiber lasers are attractive for practical applications as compact sources of femtosecond pulses. However, it is generally accepted that they cannot compete with mode-locked bulk lasers in pulse energies and average powers. Usually the pulse energy from a fiber laser is less than 100 pJ. For many applications much higher energies and average signal powers are required.
