Abstract
An exciting new trend in free-space optical switching and computing systems is the use of smart pixel device arrays which combine the processing power of electronics with the interconnection and communication advantages of optics. A recent system prototype incorporates GaAs FET-SEED smart pixels, computer generated holograms, 2-D fiber bundles, frequency stabilized lasers, and novel optomechanical packaging to implement the five-stage, 32 × 16 free-space optical switching fabric shown in Fig, 1.1
