Abstract
The winner-take-all (WTA) circuit, originally implemented in silicon, is a key function in many neural network architectures.1 It consists of N units where the only unit whose output will be on is the one with the largest input. The circuit suppresses all the other outputs. For optical neural networks, the inputs and outputs are optical signals. Although it is not possible to make light sources in silicon, it is possible in GaAs.
