Abstract
It has been shown recently that not only compressive strained but also tensile strained1 quantum-well lasers improved the laser performance. The improvement by tensile strain was not predicted by the original theory.2 It was pointed out3 that the enhanced TM polarization matrix element is important to explain the improved performance of tensile strained quantum-well lasers and the inclusion of spin-orbit split-off band is important in the modelling of strained "bulk-like" semiconductor lasers. The optical dipole moments are fundamentally important for any interband absorption and gain processes. The quantum sized effects on the physic of tensile strained quantum-well lasers are less understood.
