Stabte soliton generation in continuously frequency-shifted erbium fiber lasers

Abstract

Conventional techniques such as passive1 or active2 mode-locking proved to be effective for short pulse generation in erbium-doped fiber lasers. The pulse generation mechanism in these cases is the time periodic modulation of the cavity loss, which forces a large number of modes to oscillate in phase. In alternative to mode-locking techniques, a different method for pulse generation that is based on the suppression of the cavity modes was earlier proposed for dye lasers.3 In this method, the laser cavity simply involves, besides the active medium, an acousto-optic (AO) frequency shifter, a bandpass filter and a nonlinear element.
