Multi-gigabit signal processing using high speed gain dynamics in multiple quantum well semiconductor optical amplifier

Abstract

In recent years, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) have attracted considerable attention for various signal processing applications. Wavelength conversion at 2.5-4 Gbit/s using cross gain modulation in SOAs1–3 and demultiplexing at 6 Gbit/s using a SOA electrically modulated gate4 have been demonstrated. Previously, 4-6 Gbit/ s operation was considered to be the speed limit using gain modulation induced by simple stimulated recombination. Therefore, four-wave mixing (FWM) has been exploited to achieve 20 Gbit/s wavelength conversion and optical demultiplexing.5 However, such technique suffers from inherent polarization sensitivity and poor conversion efficiency.
