Abstract
In many applications, the state of polarization of the light is an important parameter that has to be accurately controlled. We have investigated the effect of a nondispersive birefringent medium on the propagation of ultrashort pulses, and shown that the large bandwidth of such pulses can lead to severe effects on the pulse, involving both the polarization and chirp characteristics. As a result, filtering of the pedestal of compressed optical pulses could be achieved using a birefringent fiber and a polarizer.
