Cr4 + :GSGG and Dy2 + :CaF2 passive Q-switches for the ruby laser

Abstract

Passive Q-switching employing saturable absorbers is simple and yet practical. In this paper we report two solid-state saturable absorbers for the ruby laser, i.e., Cr4+:GSGG and Dy2+:CaF2. The absorption peak near 694 nm is assigned to the 3T2 to 1E2 transition in the octahedral site for Cr4+:GSGG,‘ and 5I8 to 4f-5d band transitions for Dy2+:CaF2.2 Bleaching measurements of these two saturable absorbers were performed using an electro-optic Q-switched ruby laser. The results are shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2.
