Analysis of pump–probe measurements and carrier overflow effects in quantum well optical amplifier

Abstract

This paper addresses difficulties in interpreting pump probe measurements of laser diode amplifiers1–3 in terms of carrier (rather than gain) dynamics. The origin of the difficulties lies in the fact that the injected photons overlap the entire optical waveguide of the amplifier and hence sense the response of a multi-material structure and not only the actual gain region. This issue becomes of prominent significance in quantum well (QW) amplifiers3 where the gain takes place in a small part of the waveguide volume.
