Abstract

We report the first study of a new variable- strain quantum well (VSQW) heterostructure which has different pseudomorphic strains from one side of the quantum well (QW) to the other. We have conceived and designed this VSQW such that the strain- induced potential profiles for heavy- and light-hole exhibit different slopes within the QW. Thus, the heavy- and light-hole bands can be tuned much differently using the quantum confined Stark effect than in a regular QW.
