Abstract

Intersubband transitions in asymmetric multiquantum well (MQW) structures have recently been shown to yield huge second order nonlinear optical susceptibilities in the mid-infrared region.1 These large nonlinearities are ascribed to (i) large dipolar matrix elements due to the small effective mass in the conduction band and (ii) the double resonance effect. It has been recently suggested that those optical nonlinearities could be extended to the near infrared region using interband-intersubband transitions.2 In this Communication, we shall describe the first experimental results of mid- and near- two photon absorption (TPA) in asymmetric MQW structures due to these intersubband-interband transitions.
