Quantitative investigation of optical phase-measuring techniques for ultrashort-pulse lasers

Abstract

The use of chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) to amplify ultrashort laser pulses1 to high energy has made the intentional manipulation of the frequency dependent optical phase of the pulse widely accepted. With the development of detailed ray-tracing models of the pulse streteher2 the overall optical phase shift of the laser system could be optimized to generate pulses that are phase compensated up to fourth order. In our most recent work3 we have taken this technique a step further by designing a modified pulse stretcher that permits active, continuous control over the optical phase in real time.
