Abstract
The incorporation of SBS phase conjugation into a laser-amplifier system intended to amplify pulses with durations from 0.5 to 1 μs is complicated by the low power delivered to the SBS cell. If the peak power incident on the phase conjugator in our previous report of a 25-J/pulse, 10-ns amplifier system1 is scaled down by a factor of 50 for 500-ns pulses, then the SBS must be operated very near threshold, particularly in the presence of strong thermally induced wave-front aberrations in the amplifier.
