Degenerate four-wave mixing and phase conjugation in solid-state laser media

Abstract

Phase-distortion correction of an optical wave propagating in laser media is a crucial problem that must be taken into account in laser sources. Indeed, many applications require a high-spatial-quality, diffraction-limited output beam. For this purpose, phase conjugation through stimulated Brillouin scattering with the master-oscillator /power-amplification (MOPA) configuration has already shown potential for producing high beam quality.1 We present another method for generating the phase-conjugate wavefronts based on the degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in the laser medium itself.
