Abstract

Because most of the currently operational fiber-based systems are specified at 1.3-μm, potential upgrading of these systems has been directed toward the development of efficient broadband fiber amplifiers in the 1.3-μm region. To be compatible with the existing systems, silica-based amplifiers are preferable; however, to date such preferred rare-earth-based amplifiers have been singularly unsuccessful in this spectral region and the Pr-doped fluoride-based fiber amplifier has shown the greatest potential.1
