Optical-fiber dispersion compensation at 100 Gbit/s by using a novel transmission filter based on chirped Bragg fiber gratings

Abstract

The proposed application of Bragg fiber gratings1 for dispersion correction2 has been established for many years. With improved techniques for the production of efficient chirped Bragg gratings (Ref. 3 and references therein), considerable effort has recently been directed towards dispersion correction in long distance4 and short-distance/very-high-capacity optical communication. Since the gratings operate in reflective mode, a 6-dB minimum loss is inherent in the simplest coupling scheme utilizing a 3-dB coupler.
