Abstract

Recently developed ultra-fast all optical switches based on the Sagnac and Mach-Zehnder interferometric principle demonstrated a few ps switching window with a small optical control pulse energies by utilizing the resonant optical nonlinearities[l, 2], These switches have good potential for optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) systems. For ultra-fast switches based on the Mach-Zehnder, there are two additional configurations possible with different propagation geometries for the control and data pulses.
