Abstract
Sum frequency mixing between the intracavity field of a diode-pumped neodymium laser and a GaAlAs diode using KTP is an attractive technique for generating output wavelengths in the blue region of the spectrum.1,2 Specific advantages of this approach include the absence of the mode-hopping noise typically observed in intracavity-doubled lasers, the attractive material properties of KTP and the wide temperature and wavelength acceptance of the noncritically phase- matched sum frequency interaction. Signal-resonant sum frequency generation3 can be used to generate visible light at optical efficiencies that are comparable to those of devices based on direct second harmonic generation.
