Abstract

Optical beam splitting is a critical function in optical-switching applications. For large splitting ratios (1 × N with N ≥ 16), fused-fiber splitters are impractice and integrated-optical splitters appear more reliable. Desired characteristics include robustness in fabrication tolerance and manufacture, implementation in many systems, insensitivity to polarization, uniformity in splitting ratios, low insertion loss, and compact size. Self-imaging beam splitters1 show great promise for achieving these characteristics.
