Abstract

One way of overcoming the bandwidth reduction associated with phase matching in nonlinear processes such as up- and downconversion is to reduce the crystal thickness to below its coherence length so that phase matching is no longer a limiting parameter.1 The associated loss in efficiency can be compensated by the use of both high-intensity ultrashort pulses and very highly nonlinear materials.
