Abstract
In the past few years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of new techniques for the passive mode locking of picosecond and femtosecond cw solid-state lasers by using the fast saturable-absorber action induced by third-order nonlinearities. Although it has been known for a long time that the cascading of second-order processes can give rise to a large equivalent third-order susceptibility χ(3) , this effect has not yet been fully exploited for the mode locking of cw lasers.
