Abstract

All-optical switches have attracted much, attention because of their potential application in high-speed optical communication systems. Among the concepts that have been studied are nonlinear étalon devices, both in InGaAs/InP around 1.5 μm (Ref. 1) and in GaAs-based structures at 850 nm.2 In general, these devices required different excite and signal wavelengths in order to avoid signal absorption. Switching has also been studied in CdS in which the natural dichroism of a CdS platelet allowed switching by using a single wavelength in two polarization states. In this paper we report switching in InP-based Fabry-Perot waveguides. In this instance the large splitting between the heavy-hole and light-hole absorption band edges in a quantum-well structure was used to provide a polarization-dependent absorption, which permitted single-wavelength operation.
