Frequency stabilization of a 633-nm He–Ne laser by using frequency-modulation spectroscopy of 127I2 enhanced by an external optical cavity

Abstract

The intracavity iodine-stabilized He–Ne laser at λ = 633 nm1 has become an important wavelength standard in interferometry and length metrology. However, the external-mirror laser cavity, with a relatively low gain medium and loss component, requires critical mirror alignment and is vulnerable to mechanical vibration and shock. Another drawback of the system is that the output is relatively low power and is inherently frequency modulated.
