Abstract
The 2-μm Ho, Tm, and Ho:YAG lasers are interesting because of their inherent eye safety, which makes them particularly useful for applications in medicine and laser radar.1 Lidar systems based on this type of laser combined with laser diode pumping are compact and have high efficiencies and long lifetimes. The laser system matching the technical requirements of the lidar system has a master-oscillator power-amplifier configuration. Strongly pumped amplifier rods show an increased level of optical-index inhomogeneity, mostly due to the inhomogeneous change of temperature of the rod. Phase-conjugate mirrors should be implemented in such a design to improve the performance.2
