Abstract
The demands of the semiconductor industry, medical research establishment, and broader scientific community have hastened the development of a powerful array of microcharacterization tools. An overview of these systems will be given, with emphasis on the suitability of each. Optical instruments will receive special attention, including the author s own experiences with the near-field scanning optical microscope.
