Abstract

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of liquid crystals have been extensively investigated.1 MacDonald et al. reported optically induced director axis reorientation in a surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC).2 They demonstrated all-optical switching with rather high intensities of the order of 103 W/cm2 at a wavelength of 514.5 nm. Here we present an experimental investigation of light-induced director axis reorientation in dye-doped SSFLCs by means of the two-wavelength and pump-probe measurement. A large improvement in sensitivity and response speed of the light-induced director axis reorientation, compared with undoped SSFLCs, is demonstrated.
