Abstract

Chromium-doped crystals have attracted considerable attention as diode-pumped replacements for Ti:sapphire lasers. There are two primary reasons for this interest. First, chromium-doped crystals have a broad absorption band around 690 ran, where high-power laser diodes are available. Second, the fluorescence linewidth of the 4T2 to 4A2- lasing transition is extremely broad, covering more than 200 nm. This large linewidth results from vibrational broadening of the 4A2 lower lasing level.
